# Asian Games

  • The 19th Asian Games that were set to be held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in September have been postponed, organisers told on Friday.
  • The Olympics council of Asia said, following a meeting with the Chinese Olympics committee, that the Asian games, scheduled to be held in September, would be postponed and new dates will be announced in near future.
  • The Asian youth games, also to be held in China in December, would be cancelled.

# Srilanka

  • Srilankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksha on Friday declared an emergency, for the second time in little over a month.
  • The second emergency was declared amid escalating citizens protests and massive trade unions action.
  • Mr Gotabaya earlier declared emergency regulations on April 1, after street protests intensified in Srilanka.
  • The state of emergency gives the police and the security forces sweeping powers to arbitrarily arrest and detain people.

# Gyanvapi mosque surveyed

  • Amid tight security, a team of lawyers and opposing legal parties led by a court appointed advocate commissioner on Friday conducted a video graphic survey of the Maa Shringar gauri site located at the back of the Western Wall of Gyanvapi mosque.
  • A local court had recently appointed court commissioner Ajay kumar Mishra to inspect the site, videograph it and submit a report.
  • In April last year, this case was filed saying that they were entitled to perform daily darshan, pooja and all rituals of Maa shringaar gauri within old temple complex.

# Fertility rate

  • The total fertility rate, an average number of children per woman, has further declined from 2.2 to 2.0 at the national level between National family health survey 4 and 5.
  • There are only five states – Bihar (2.98), Meghalaya (2.91), Uttar pradesh (2.35), Jharkhand (2.26), Manipur (2.17) – in India which are above replacement level of fertility of 2.1.
