# Infant mortality rate

  • India, which had the ignominious reputation of being the only country in the world where a larger proportion of the girls below one year of age died than boys, finally saw its male and female infant mortality rate equalise in 2020.
  • However, in 16 states IMR remained marginally higher for female babies than males, though the gap had reduced since 2021.
  • In rural India, though the gap had reduced, female IMR remained marginally higher than male IMR.
  • In 2011, all states had higher IMR for female babies than males, except Uttarakhand.

# Nobel for medicine

  • The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was awarded on Monday to Svante Paabo.
  • He is a Swedish born scientist who spent decades trying to extract DNA from 40000 year old bones, culminating in the unveiling of the Neanderthal genome in 2010.
  • The publication of that genome opened the door to investigating questions that had bedevilled paleontologist since Neanderthal fossils were first found in a German quarry in 1856.

# IAF

  • India’s first indigenous light combat helicopter, capable of offensive operations on high altitudes areas like Siachen glacier and Eastern ladakh, was inducted into the IAF on Monday.
  • This light combat helicopter has been named Prachand at the jodhpur airbase in the morning.

# United Kingdom

  • Facing a mutiny of conservative Party lawmakers, PM Liz truss of Britain on Monday reversed plans to abolish the top income tax rate of 45% on high earners.
  • Truss economic proposals, announced 10 days ago, had already roiled financial markets.
