# COP26

 

 

  • Leaders at the COP26 global climate conference in Glasgow have pledged to stop deforestation by the end of the decade and slash emissions of the greenhouse gas, methane, to help slow climate change.
  • Nearly 90 countries have joined a US and EU led effort to slash emissions of methane 30% by 2030 from 2020 levels.
  • India said that climate finance cannot continue at the levels decided in 2009, and should be atleast $1 trillion.
  • India has launched a new initiative – infrastructure for resilient island states – for developing the infrastructure of small island nations vulnerable to climate change.
  • One sun one world one grid group – an India-UK joint initiative to tap solar energy and have it travel seamlessly across borders – was announced in Glasgow.

 

 

 

# Conference on Afghanistan

 

 

  • Calling India a “spoiler” in Afghanistan, pakistan’s national security adviser Moeed yusuf said he would not accept the Modi government’s invitation to the meeting of regional security in Delhi.
  • Afghanistan’s NSA has confirmed his presence along with other invitees from kyrgystan, Kazakhastan and Tajikistan.
  • The chinese government has not yet confirmed as they might join the conference online.

 

 

 

# Defence acquisition council

 

 

  • The Defence acquisition council, which met on Tuesday, cancelled a tender for procurement of naval guns from the US.
  • DAC added the quantity to an existing upgraded super rapid gun mount (SRGM) being manufactured by Bharat heavy electricals limited (BHEL).
  • The council accorded acceptance of necessity (AON) for capital acquisition and modernisation proposals estimated at 7965 crore rupees.

 

 

 

# Island nations

 

 

  • India on tuesday launched an ambitious initiative for developing the infrastructure of small island nations.
  • The launch of infrastructure for resilient island states (IRIS) was also attended by Australian Prime minister Scott morrison and UN secretary general Antonio Guterres.

 

 

 

# CAATSA

 

 

  • Three republican senators have introduced an amendment to the national defence authorisation act FY2022 – an annual defence budget bill.
  • This amendment will make it harder for the executive branch of the US government to impose sanctions on members of the Quad.
  • This move comes as India is expected to take delivery of the S-400 triumf missile system from Moscow.
