Driven by strong domestic growth, collection of goods and services tax rose 11.6% in April to a record high of ₹1, 87,035 crore.
The mop up in April was based on transactions in March.
All segments, barring integrated GST on imports, recorded the highest level since the new levy kicked in from July 2017.
The previous high of ₹167540 crore was recorded exactly a year ago.
# Cantonment
The Union Government has kicked off a plan to abolish the 62 Cantonments around the country as archaic colonial legacies.
The notification for disbanding of the Yol cantonment in Himachal pradesh was issued last week.
The plan is to carve out the military areas in all Cantonments and convert them into exclusive military stations with the army exercising complete control over them.
The civilian areas will be merged with local municipalities.
# April
India’s fuel and power demand continued in the slow lane for the second month in a row in April inspite of an uptick in farm and economic activities.
Petrol demand rose 2.5% in April from a year ago.
Diesel consumption, a key indicator of economic activities, fared better with a 6.7% growth over April 2022.
Power consumption also dipped for a second month in a row in April to 130.5 billion units from 132 billion units a year ago.
# UPI
Transactions on the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) platform hit a new high of 890 crore in April 2023.
The value of these transactions was also at a new record at ₹14.07 lakh crore.
