# Chess olympiad

  • Prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the FIDE 44th chess olympiad in Chennai on Thursday.
  • Record 186 nations are participating and there will be never before simultaneous live broadcast from around 700 boards.
  • USA is the strongest contender for gold with four of its five players among the top 14 in the world.
  • In absence of Chinese and Russian teams India is also a strong contender for a podium finish.

# West Bengal

  • Five days after TMC minister Partha chatterjee was arrested in the West Bengal school service commission recruitment scam, he has been expelled from its ministerial responsibilities and suspended from the party.
  • All the departments earlier with partha chatterjee has now been transferred to Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee.
  • Pressure was mounting on Mamta Banerjee to act against the Party’s senior leader since his arrest on July 23.

# Rajya sabha

  • Rajya sabha suspended three more MPs on Thursday for a week taking the total number of suspended members to 23.
  • On Monday, AAM aadmi party MPs Sushil kumar Gupta and Sandeep kumar Pathak and independent MP from Assam Ajit kumar Bhuyan were suspended for holding placards.
  • Rajya sabha witnessed two adjournments in the second half before it was finally adjourned for the day.

# Taiwan

  • Amid rising tensions, US President Joe Biden and China’s premier Xi Jinping on Thursday hold a phone meeting on a range of issues including Taiwan.
  • Chinese has warned USA over a possible visit of US house Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
