# UK

  • Indian nationals top the tally of skilled worker and student visas issued by the UK over the past year, according to official immigration statistics released in London on Thursday.
  • The office for national statistics data collated by the UK home offices shows that Indians were the top nationality for cross sector skilled work, including specifically targeted healthcare visas aimed at filling staff shortages in National Health Services.
  • They also made up the largest group of students granted visas under the new graduate post study work route, representing 41% of the grants.
  • Indian nationals had the second highest number of dependants increasing from 22598 to 42381.

# Parliament

  • Three major non BJP parties – BSP, JDS and TDP – distanced themselves on Thursday from the 20 strong opposition bloc’s proposed boycott of the new parliament building’s inauguration.
  • JDS patriarch Devegowda confirmed his participation in the ceremony in his capacity as a former prime Minister and a citizen of the country.
  • In Andhrapradesh TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu became the second major party after YSRCP to announce it would be a part of the inauguration.
  • Telangana’s BRS officially remained undecided.

  • Death claims for insurance companies have shrunk with the waning of the pandemic.
  • Insurance behemoth LIC has seen its death claims drop by over one third.
  • HDFC life insurance saw death claims fall 28%.

# NITI aayog

  • The government policy think tank NITI aayog will be organising its 8th governing council meeting on May 27 at the new convention centre in Pragati Maidan in the national capital.
  • Eight prominent topics will be discussed during the day long meeting : Viksit bharat at 2047, thrust on MSMEs and others.
