# Draupadi Murmu

  • Draupadi Murmu took the oath of office as the 15th president of India on Monday and created history by becoming the first tribal head of state and second woman to occupy the country’s highest constitutional post.
  • She took her oath of office in Hindi and in the name of God to “preserve, protect and defend” the Constitution and the law.
  • Several world leaders including the presidents of Russia, Srilanka, Bangladesh and Nepal, congratulated Draupadi Murmu and expressed their desire to work with her to enhance their respective nations multifaceted ties with India.

# SC collegium

  • In a significant step to fill vacancies in the higher judiciary, the supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice NV Ramanna on Monday approved and recommended to the centre the proposal for the elevation of 20 advocates and 15 judicial officers as judges in six high courts.
  • The collegium also comprises Justice Uday umesh lalit and AM Khanwilkar.
  • The collegium approved the proposal for the elevation of a maximum of 13 advocates as judges in the Punjab and Haryana high court.

# Britain

  • Former UK chancellor and candidate for prime minister Rishi Sunak, called China Britain’s main threat ahead of a scheduled Monday night TV debate with his opponent and fellow tory foreign secretary Liz Truss.
  • Mr. Sunak faces Ms truss in an internal conservative Party election, in which some 160000 tories will elect their leader and PM.
  • The winner is expected to be announced on September 5.
  • Ms Truss leads Mr Sunak by a considerable margin in an internal survey.

# Direct tax collections

  • Net direct tax collections in the April June quarter of the current fiscal rose by 41% to ₹3.54 lakh crore.
  • During the April June period of 2021-22, the government had collected a net direct tax of 2.50 lakh crore.
