# Rahul Gandhi

  • Congress’s Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi faces possible disqualification from Lok Sabha and a six year bar on contesting elections after a district court in Gujarat’s Surat sentenced him on Thursday to two years in jail in a 2019 Criminal defamation case.
  • The case was filled by a Karnataka BJP MLA for his remark at a poll rally in Karnataka’s Kolar over insulting the Surname Modi.
  • Chief judicial magistrate of Surat held Rahul Gandhi guilty under sections 499 and 500 of the IPC, and then granted him bail against a bond of ₹15000 and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal the verdict in higher courts.
  • But the Leeway may not be enough to save him from the disqualification provision in the Representation of the people act, which kicks in as soon as a member of parliament or a state legislature is convicted of an offence punishable with two years jail Or more.

# Lok sabha

  • The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the appropriation bill in less than nine minutes without any discussion.
  • The bill paved the way for the centre to spend over ₹45 lakh crore in the next financial year.
  • The proceedings of the house were conducted amid din, with PM Modi , Rajnath Singh and other ministers in attendance.
  • The bills were passed by the voice vote.

# Canada

  • Canada saw record high population growth last year due to a surge in immigrants and temporary residents, the government statistics agency released data.
  • If the trend continues the nation will double its population in 26 years.
  • As of January 1, the country’s population hit 39,566,248 after adding 1050110 people over the previous 12 months.
  • A record 437180 immigrants landed in Canada in 2022, and that number is scheduled to rise to 500000 per by 2025.

# Accenture

  • Accenture has said it will be slashing 19000 jobs and lowering its revenue forecast as the IT sector is bogged down by clients going slow on Tech spends.
  • The cut in jobs represent 2.5% of the company’s workforce of 7.3 lakh.
