The Loksabha on Tuesday sent the bill which seeks to raise the age of marriage for women to 21 to a standing Committee.
The minister for women and child development Smriti Irani said the proposed legislation would ensure uniformity across all religions and communities.
Smriti Irani said the bill would also amend the Indian Christian marriage act 1972, The parsi marriage and divorce act 1936, The Muslim personal law (Shariat) application act 1937, the special marriage act 1954, the hindu marriage act 1955 and foreign marriage act, 1956.
# Electoral reforms bill
The election laws (amendment) bill, 2021, which seeks to link the electoral rolls to the aadhar database, was passed in the Rajya sabha on Tuesday.
In the process, the trinamool congress leader Derek o brien was suspended for the unruly behaviour.
This electoral reforms bill was brought in after the consultation with the election Commission of India.
# Myanmar
Foreign secretary Harsh shringla has reached on a two day visit to Myanmar.
He will meet the state administration council chaired by General Min Aung Hlang, who toppled the elected government last february.
Harsh shringla is expected to discuss Indian concerns about insurgencies along 1600 km long India Myanmar border.
# Palm oil
Concerned over high prices of cooking oils, the government has reduced the basic customs duty on refined palm oil to 12.5℅ from 17.5℅ till march next year.
This decision will boost domestic supplies and bring down prices.
