Six time prime minister and acting president Ranil Wickramasinghe on Wednesday was elected president of Srilanka amid island nation’s painful economic crisis.
Ranil Wickramasinghe won 134 votes in the 225 member Parliament in a three way contest.
Dullas Alahaperumma, a formerly Rajapaksha aligned now independent MP, won 82 votes.
# Cheetah
India came one step closer to bringing back the world’s fastest animal to the country with an agreement signed in Delhi on Wednesday.
The cheetah was declared extinct in the country in 1952.
This agreement will prepare the ground for the relocation of the first batch from southern Africa to the Kuno national park in Madhya Pradesh.
The current carrying capacity for the Kuno national park is a maximum of 21 Cheetahs.
# Chinese firm
The railways has placed a purchase order for 39000 wheels for its LHB coaches from Chinese manufacturer Taiyuan.
The previous order of the railways was affected by the war between Russia and Ukraine as the previous manufacturer was an Ukrainian firm.
The price of the previous purchase was 1.6% less than the current order.
# Crude oil
With global oil prices easing, the centre on Wednesday slashed the windfall tax levied on crude oil products, reduced the export tax on Aviation turbine fuel and diesel and scrapped the duty on petrol exports.
On July 1, the government had levied fresh taxes on export of ATF, petrol and crude oil.
