Srilanka will witness a three cornered race for presidency on Wednesday.
Acting president Ranil Wickramasinghe, the formerly Rajapaksha’s aligned and now independent Dullas Alahaperumma and the leftist Anura kumara Dissanayake were on Tuesday nominated by parties in Parliament, a day ahead of the poll through the secret ballot.
The Rajapaksha’s Srilanka podujana peramuna (SLPP) dominates the legislature with well over 100 seats.
Political sources indicate that the Rajapaksha’s family is firmly backing Ranil Wickramasinghe.
# Citizenship
Over 1.6 lakh Indians renounced their citizenship in 2021, highest in the past five years, according to the information provided by the ministry of home affairs in Parliament on Tuesday.
Over 78000 Indians acquired the US citizenship, the highest among all other countries.
As many as 362 Indians living in China also acquired Chinese citizenship.
The reply stated that the number of Indians in Australia who relinquished their citizenship stood at 23533, Canada at 21597, UK at 14,637.
# Heatwave in Europe
A heatwave fuelling ferocious wildfires in Europe pushed temperatures in Britain over 40 degree celsius for the first time on Tuesday after regional heat records tumbled in France.
Britain’s previous all time temperature record of 38.7 degree celsius, had already been smashed on Tuesday.
Experts blame climate change for the latest heatwave.
