China’s satellite tracking vessel Yuan Wang 5 arrived at Srilanka’s Hambantota port on Tuesday, despite India and the USA voicing concern with Colombo over the military ship’s visit.
According to Colombo based official sources both the India and US had conveyed their apprehensions to the Srilankan government at the highest level citing the vessel’s military capabilities while in the Indian Ocean region.
The Srilankan government is counting on China to help in the Island’s efforts to restructure its external debt, to be eligible for crucial IMF support amid an agonizing economic downturn. Chinese loans account for about 10% of Srilanka’s total foreign debt.
# Bihar
The Nitish kumar led Bihar cabinet on Tuesday expanded with the induction of 31 ministers – 16 from Rashtriya janta dal, 11 from janta dal united, 2 from congress, 2 from other parties.
They were administered the oath of office by governor phagu Chauhan.
Seven RJD legislators from Yadav community became ministers.
Five ministers are from the muslim community.
# African cheetahs
India’s ambitious projects to translocate African cheetahs has missed an unofficial deadline on August 15, though sources say the wild cats are likely to arrive here within this year.
Though agreements have been signed with both South Africa and Namibia, administrative delays, as well as the presence of leopards in the Cheetah’s prospective destination – the Kuno palpur forest reserve, Madhya pradesh are believed to be barriers to their arrival.
Around 35 cheetahs would be needed over time to establish a sustainable population.
# FIFA
In a massive setback for the country, world football governing body FIFA on Tuesday suspended the All India football federation for “undue influence from the third parties” and said the U-17 world Cup cannot currently be held as planned.
The country was scheduled to host the FIFA tournament from October 11-30.
