# Supreme Court

  • The centre on Sunday questioned the Supreme Court’s competence to entertain petitions demanding extension of the concept of marriage beyond heterosexual unions and said it was tantamount to creating a new social institution.
  • Centre dubbed the demand for recognition of same sex marriage as an “urban elitist concept far removed from the social ethos of the country”.
  • The centre said competent legislature will have to take into account broader views and Voice of all rural, semi rural and urban population, views of religious denominations, and also personal laws as well as customs governing the field of marriage.
  • The centre said marriage is an institution which can be created, recognised, conferred with legal sanctity and regulated only by the competent legislature.

# Smartphone exports

  • The export of electronics goods has overtaken readymade garments, a traditional mainstay from India, on the back of a surge in shipment of mobile phones.
  • Latest data released by the commerce Department estimated electronics exports to have shot up over 50% in 2022-23 to $23.6 billion.
  • During the last fiscal year, the export of readymade garments went up just a little over 1% to $16.3 billion.
  • Electronics were the sixth biggest item in the basket, just a little lower than the $25.4 billion drugs and pharmaceuticals, one of the major exports from India.

# Vodafone

  • Vodafone idea recently awarded a network gear order of over ₹200 crore to Chinese company ZTE.
  • The company has given orders for broadband equipment in Telecom circles of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya pradesh and chhattisgarh.
  • The matter has been brought to the notice of the national security Council Secretariat.

# Ukraine

  • Unilateral action on Trade by EU member states is unacceptable, a European Commission spokesperson said on Sunday.
  • Comment came after Poland and Hungary announced bans on grain and other food imports from Ukraine to protect the local agricultural sector.
