Srilanka’s president Gotabaya Rajapaksha on Thursday sent his resignation letter by email from Singapore, the parliamentary speaker’s office said.
The development came a day after Mr. Gotabaya fled the country and sought refuge in Maldives and then in Singapore.
Singapore’s foreign ministry said that Gotabaya Rajapaksha was allowed to enter Singapore on a private visit.
He was not given asylum nor he requested for an asylum.

The plan for the integrated food parks was announced in a joint statement after the leaders of the I2U2 grouping held a summit on Thursday.
The UAE will invest $2 billion in India to create the food parks, said joint statement.
