# Covid-19

  • Cases fuelled by the Omicron variant of Covid-19 have initially spread only in Urban areas.
  • However, many rural and semi urban places recorded a sharp spike in infections in the past week.
  • At the start of this year, 50℅ of the cases were from the Urban centres such as Mumbai, chennai, Delhi, Kolkata.
  • However, the share reduced to 35℅ by Wednesday.
  • The share of cases from rural areas increased from 6℅, at the start of the year to 12℅ on Wednesday.

# Forest cover

  • Forest and tree cover in the country has increased by 2261 sq km since the last assessment in 2019.
  • This data has been released by the India state of forest report – 2021 released on Thursday.
  • Total forest and tree cover was 80.9 million hectares, which accounted for 24.62℅ of the geographical area of the country.

# Srilanka

  • India on Thursday confirmed a $400mn currency swap agreement with Srilanka.
  • India also deferred a $500mn due for settlement to the Asian clearing union.
  • These measures have been taken to pull out Srilanka from an unprecedented economic crisis.

# India-UK

  • Minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal and UK trade secretary Anne Marie Trevelyan kicked off talks for an ambitious comprehensive free trade agreement on Thursday.
  • The negotiations are expected to be completed within a year.
  • Agreement will cover both goods and services.
  • The trade is expected to be double to $100 billion in 10 years.
