# Governor

  • Senior BJP leader and Maharashtra governor Bhagat singh Koshyari, who had sparked controversies with his outspoken statements, has resigned from his office.
  • In a major reshuffle of the gubernatorial pack, including retired Supreme Court Judge S Abdul Nazeer as Andhra pradesh governor, the president named new governors in 12 states and LG in Ladakh.
  • The 13 include six new faces, of them 4 are BJP leaders.
  • Nazeer was the part of the five judge Supreme Court bench that unanimously decided in 2019 to give a 2.77 acre site in Ayodhya for the construction of Ram temple.

# Supreme Court

  • Having been known over 30 years for often denying clearances to develop projects to protect the environment, the Supreme Court’s green bench has now taken a pragmatic approach.
  • In a series of orders last week, the bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and Vikram nath cleared 118 projects which has been delayed for over five years because of pending litigation.
  • Supreme Court judges said the contest between development and environmental concerns is ever ongoing and we should take a pragmatic approach.

# India

  • India has overtaken France to become the UK’s largest market of Scotch Whisky in terms of volume with a 60% hike in imports in 2022 over the previous year.
  • The Scotch whisky association said that India imported 219 millions 70cl bottles of Scotch compared to France’s 205 million last year.
  • In terms of value, the US continued to hold on to its top most position as the largest market at 1.1 billion pounds.
  • The total export value of Scotch whisky – one of the UK’s biggest exports was up 37% by value to 6.7 billion dollars.

# Turkiye, Syria

  • The death toll from the huge quakes that hit South Eastern Turkiye and Northern Syria rose to 33719 on Sunday.
  • The overall death toll in Syria stood at 3553.
