Srilanka’s Prime Minister Mahindra Rajapaksha resigned on Monday, hours after his supporters brutally assaulted peaceful anti government protestors amid a worsening economic crisis in the island.
The resignation was accepted, according to a Gazette notification, and consequently, the cabinet stands dissolved as per the Srilankan Constitution.
Three persons died outside the capital in ensuing clashes, while atleast 150 were injured in Colombo.
# Sedition law
The ministry of home affairs on Monday informed the Supreme Court of its decision to reexamine and reconsider the sedition law.
The government of India has decided to reexamine and reconsider the provisions of section 124A (sedition) of the Indian penal code.
The home ministry urged the Court to wait till the government completes the exercise of reconsideration of the law before “appropriate forum”.
# Rupee
The rupee on Monday fell to an all time low of 77.44 against the US dollar due to sell off in equities.
This devaluation happened due to concerns over weakening global growth prospects, outflow of the dollar and on fears of further monetary tightening by central banks to counter rising inflation.
The previous closing low for the rupee was 77.09.
