# Parliament building

  • Twenty opposition parties have announced a boycott of the ceremony to unveil the new parliament building on Sunday.
  • Opposition is arguing that the inauguration by PM Narendra Modi by ‘sidelining’ president Draupadi Murmu constitutes “a grave insult and direct assault on democracy”.
  • The decision was taken by a bloc of 19 parties led by Congress.
  • The BJP led NDA hit back at the opposition for its decision to boycott the inauguration of the new parliament building by PM Modi and was bolstered by support from BJD and YSRCP as well as its former ally akalis.

# Monsoon

  • Top weather experts from Indian meteorological department and Skymet on Wednesday said the monsoon current was now undergoing a significant realignment, signalling positive prospects for its onset over port blair and eventually Kerala, around predicted dates.
  • A system over the South Indian Ocean was earlier not allowing cross equatorial flow to move across the Arabian sea.
  • Some experts are predicting that monsoon is likely to set over Kerala only around June 4.

# International Booker Prize

  • “Time shelter” a novel in which a wave of nostalgia sweeps Europe and entire countries consider living in past eras, on Tuesday won the International booker prize.
  • International booker prize is one of the most prestigious awards for fiction translated into English.
  • Georgi Gospodinov, the book’s Bulgarian author, will share the prize of £50000 worth roughly $62000 with Angela Rodel, who translated the novel into English.
  • They received the award at a ceremony in London.

# LIC

  • Insurance giant LIC saw its March quarter net profit rise nearly six fold after a change in accounting policy.
  • The net profit for the forth quarter stood at ₹13427 crore an increase of 466% over the last year.
