# Nobel Prize

  • Jailed Belarusian activist Ales Byalyatski, Russian rights group memorial and Ukraine’s centre for civil liberties won the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, amid a war in their region that is the worst conflict in Europe since world War two.
  • The award has the echoes of cold War era, when soviet dissidents such as Andrei Sakharov and Alexander won nobels for peace and literature.
  • Centre for civil liberties in Ukraine has been documenting Russia’s war crimes since the invasion begun in January.

# Supreme Court

  • Ahead of the hearing in Supreme Court where it has to give its opinion on according Scheduled caste status to dalits who have converted to Islam and Christianity, the centre on Friday appointed a three member commission to examine the demand in its entirety including its implication on the existing schedule castes.
  • The panel has a deadline of two years and will be headed by former chief justice of India KG Balakrishnan.
  • The Constitution (schedule castes) order, 1950 states the SC status can only be accorded to persons professing Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism.

# India-UK

  • The government is unlikely to agree to major tarriff concessions, including on automobiles and Scotch, without getting a matching deal on Services under the proposed bilateral trade agreement with the UK.
  • Given, tariffs are low in UK, the only major concession that India can hope to get on the services front is easier access and liberal visa regimes for its students and professionals.
  • The vocal scotch companies are lobbying hard for tarriff concessions .

  • The ruling hands a partial victory to musk.
