# Vice president

  • Bhartiya janta party president JP Nadda on Saturday evening declared that West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankar would be national democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the post of Vice President.
  • The announcement was made at a press conference after a meeting of the BJP’s parliamentary board, the party’s highest decision making authority, which includes prime minister Narendra Modi, Defence minister Rajnath singh, Home minister Amit shah, Roads and highways minister Nitin Gadkari and Madhya pradesh chief minister Shivraj singh Chauhan.
  • Jagdeep Dhankar is from an agrarian family from jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan and a professional lawyer.

# Census

  • Nearly all Covid-related restrictions have been lifted across the world and India, but the centre has no plans to restart the decennial census operations.
  • The possible reason for continuing delay could be a possible revamp of the entire design of the census operations.
  • Several amendments are being proposed to the registration of birth and death act, 1969 which will enable the government to put in place a dynamic census register with near real time updating of all demographic data.

# Monsoon session

  • Lok sabha speaker OM Birla chaired a meeting of floor leaders of the lower house on Saturday ahead of the monsoon session of parliament beginning on Monday.
  • The opposition has demanded a discussion on the Agnipath military recruitment scheme, unemployment and farmer’s issue.
  • The government has listed 24 bills including the insolvency and Bankruptcy (amendment) bill for introduction.
  • The government may introduce the registration of press and periodicals bill, 2022, in Parliament during the monsoon session.

# Jet fuel prices

  • Jet fuel (ATF) prices were reduced by 2.2% on Saturday reflecting a fall in international crude oil prices.
  • ATF prices are revised on the 1st and 16th of every month based on international crude oil prices.
