# Marital rape

  • Minister of women and child development Smriti Irani said that government has started the process of comprehensive amendments to criminal laws related to marital rape.
  • Smriti Irani also warned against condemning every man as a rapist and every marriage as a violent one.
  • The national family health survey-4 (2015-16) shows that 7℅ of ever married women experienced spousal sexual violence.

# MGNREGA

  • Mahatma Gandhi national rural employment gurantee scheme (MGNREGA) workers are still waiting for almost 3360 crore rupees in pending wages.
  • The largest pending payments are in West Bengal, Uttar pradesh and Rajasthan, government replied in Rajya sabha.
  • This comes as the centre reduced its budget allocation for the scheme by 25℅ in comparison to revised estimates for the current year.

# Covid-19

  • The country recorded 171934 new covid-19 cases on Wednesday.
  • The total number of infections has reached 4.17 crore and the active cases have crossed the 15.6 lakh mark.
  • Kerala recorded 52199 infections on Wednesday, followed by Karnataka (20, 505) and Maharashtra (18, 067).
  • The test positivity rate was 9.8℅.

# Winter Olympics

  • A people’s liberation Army regiment commander who was involved in the June 15, 2020 clash with India in Galwan valley clash was chosen by Chinese government to carry the winter Olympics torch in Beijing.
  • The winter Olympics will open on Friday in a lavish ceremony to be attended by XI xinping and many other world leaders.
  • USA and many other European countries have boycotted the ceremony protesting against the uighurs issue.
