# Covid-19 cases

  • India reported 22,775 covid-19 cases on Saturday when for the first time the number of daily cases crossed the 20000 mark since October.
  • In all, 1431 cases of the Omnicron variant have been reported in the country.
  • Maharashtra topped the list with 460 Omnicron cases, Delhi 451, Tamil nadu 121 and Gujarat 136 cases as of Saturday.

# FCRA registrations

  • The foreign contribution (regulations) act registration of nearly 6000 NGOs has ceased to operate from January 1.
  • The ministry of home affairs refused to renew their application or the NGOs did not apply for one.
  • The registration is a mandatory requirement to receive foreign funds.
  • Only 179 NGOs applied for renewal who application were cancelled, while 5789 associations did not applied for approval.

# AFSPA

  • Assam chief minister Himanta bishwa sharma said the demand for withdrawal of the armed forces (special powers) act of 1958 would see some positive developments in the next 45 days.
  • Some tribal organisations in Nagaland have been angry with the centre for extending the AFSPA in the state by six months from December 30.

# GST collections

  • The gross goods and services tax collections hit a three months low in December at 129780 crore.
  • It is 26℅ higher than the pre pandemic levels of December 2019 and 13℅ more than the corresponding month in 2020.

# Income tax returns

  • Almost 5.89 crore income tax returns have been filed by the December 31 deadline, the finance minister said on Saturday.
  • There is a decline of about six lakhs from previous year.
  • More than 46.11 lakh ITRs were filed on Friday alone.
