The central government’s flagship rural employment scheme MGNREGA has run out of funds midway through the financial year.
Supplementary budgetary allocations will not come to the rescue for atleast another month when the next parliamentary session begins.
According to government’s own financial statement the Mahatma Gandhi national rural employment gurantee act (MGNREGA), scheme shows a net negative balance of 8686 crore rupees.
During last year’s covid-19 lockdownlockdown, the scheme was allocated it’s highest ever allocation of 1.11 lakh crore rupees.

The number of agricultural labourers who died by suicide in 2020 was 18% higher than the previous year.
National crime records bureau (NCRB) report released on Thursday also said that suicides among landowning farmers was slightly down last year.
Overall 10677 people engaged in the farm sector died by suicide last year.
